Abstract
Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) have a wide range of applications, including illumination and data transmission in Optical Wireless Communications (OWC) systems. Analog modulation used in Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) to overcome Inter-Symbol Interference (ISI) suffers from significant nonlinear distortion when voltage modulation is applied to LEDs. We investigate and analyze current modulation techniques on LEDs. Based on transconductance, MOSFET and BJT are used to transform an input signal voltage to a forward current. The performances of MOSFET-based and BJT-based transconductance circuits for current modulation are investigated and compared in terms of the linear current modulating range for LEDs.
