The writer used descriptive qualitative library research as the approach to the study. Data sources were obtained by reviewing and examining various literatures related to Harun Nasution’s thoughts that were relevant to purpose the research. Whereas the data analysis technique used is the content analysis technique. As the result, this study indicates that the essence of reforming Islamic education according to Harun Nasution is to change the conventional Islamic education system to an open Islamic education, prioritizing moral education and critical thinking. These ideas are relevance for the Society 5.0 era because of these points: first, the advanced Islamic education must develop a pattern of critical thinking to keep it up to the times. Second, moral education is required to fortify oneself from the negative influences of the Society 5.0 era. Third, the curriculum must be based on morals, spirituals, and intellectuals as time goes by. Fourth, the Islamic education method used must be able to improve student’s moral quality and critical thinking skill.
