Abstract
The paper reviews the solution of the urgent problem of enhancing the insulation reliability of the traction rolling stock's electrical machines windings in the conditions of the Eastern polygon with due consideration of geographical location and climatic features of the operation region that includes three zones. Failure statistics and analysis of traction motors damaging is provided, locations of moisture infiltration to the smallest cracks and pores of insulation material and grooves are identified; the above faults are due to the imperfection of traction motor armature design which significantly reduces electrical and mechanical strength of insulation; moisturization of insulation is especially intense when moisture is increased on the background of an abrupt increase in ambient temperature. Uneven overheating and over-moistening of the armature open end-winding insulation is noted which leads to a local decrease in reliability of this part of a traction electrical machine. Effective methods for insulation service life extension, its thermal treatment processes and implementation stages are proposed.
