Abstract

Dielectric researchers have become increasingly interested in vegetable oil-based insulating oils as a potential replacement for mineral and synthetic oil insulations in power transformers in recent years. Converting vegetable oil supply into a commercial transformer grade insulating oil that is competitive and has better intrinsic properties has a number of real-world implications and challenges. This paper intends to analyze cottonseed oil, a non-edible insulating substance. The breakdown voltages of transformer oil and cottonseed oil have been compared through experimentation. In order to study breakdown processes, different shapes of electrodes at various gaps have been taken into consideration of the non-uniform field present inside the transformer CSO shows compatible results to be used for high voltage applications.
