Abstract

Relative toxicity data on over one hundred samples of upholstery fabrics are presented. The effects of fabric type, fabric weight, backcoating weight, and other factors are discussed. The relative toxicity ranking, in order of decreasing toxicity based on time to death, was wool, silk, polyester, leather, cotton, rayon, nylon, and polyolefin. Among the wool fabrics, toxicity seemed to decrease with decreasing wool content. There appeared to be no significant effect of fabric weight, fabric weave, or backcoating.
