A COMPREHENSIVE GENERAL REFERENCE ATLAS OF THE KURIL ISLANDS

Abstract

Three Russian cartographers review the content and compilation of the comprehensive Atlas of the Kuril Islands, the concept of which was developed over the period 1997–1999 in the Cartography Laboratory of the Institute of Geography, Russian Academy of Sciences. Research work and atlas planning was undertaken as part of the federal program on “Socioeconomic Development of the Kuril Islands of Sakhalin Oblast for 1994–1995 and for the Period up to 2000.” The fundamental ideas governing the concept and plan for the Atlas (now being produced in both printed and electronic format), as well as its general orientation and content, are described.
