Abstract

The cutting process with machine tools plays an important role in the industry. Cutting force is a crucial factor in monitoring the tool status, and thus its sensorless estimation is gaining attention. The aim of this study is to develop a practical cutting force estimation. In this study, the encoder resolution is focused on, and the effect of encoder resolution on cutting force estimation is analyzed. Then, a cutting force estimation method robust to the quantization of the encoder signal is proposed. The experiments with an actual machine tool are performed, and the effectiveness of the proposed approach is demonstrated.
