Abstract

The Internet of Things (IoT) is a growing paradigm for future computing and contributing technology towards the digitized world. IoT expands the Internet with billions of objects with intelligent. As the large number of devices willing to connect dynamically, the challenges for establishing the communication among them become very crucial. The primary responsibilities of Medium Access Control (MAC) protocol are to provide the efficient channel access on shared medium and to minimize collision probability. Since the communicating devices are battery powered, development of MAC technologies for meeting IoT requirements has given great interest among researchers. This paper addresses different communicating technologies such as IEEE802.11ah, IEEE802.15.4 versus ZigBee and emerging Lo-RaWAN with respect to channel access methods. It also reveals significant contribution of access methods in adapting various IoT applications.
