Digital Simulation and Reinterpretation for Pattern from Art Heritages

Abstract

In the digital age, cultural communication depends not only on the expansion of emerging media but also on the transformation of language and information. Art and cultural heritage represent a repository of highly condensed information that through digital transformation can be extracted from a single object to create a new set of products that multiply the original possibilities in other unimagined forms. This is a process of technique, and a process of art as well. This paper mainly introduces two research projects hosted by JALAB last year, which were related to "glaze crack pattern" and "Vortex Pattern" from art heritage in Shanghai Museum. The purpose is not to discover new theory or invent new technology, but to apply existing digital techniques to find morphological rules in cultural symbols and to create easy-to-use design tools, so that with the help of which people have no background in mathematics or design skills can also create things that are not only derived from traditional culture but also have a sense of contemporary.
