Abstract

A new amplifier system incorporating a miniature TWTA and a highly versatile linearizer has been developed for next-generation phased array-based satellites. For years the death of TWTAs has been predicted; however, highly efficient and physically tiny TWTAs are now available for use in space, which, with highly versatile linearizers, offer power amplifier systems with performance that exceeds any available from SSPAs. These miniaturized TWTA systems, through the application of newly designed, highly versatile linearizers, enable optimum amplifier efficiency over the entire range of power levels needed to maintain a phased array’s beam pattern. In addition, they provide linear power over a very wide bandwidth (greater than three GHz), at frequencies through millimeter-wave, and may be utilized in applications beyond phased arrays as well.
