A Phenomenological Exploration of Grit Experiences in the Hispanic Population

Abstract

ABSTRACT In developing the renowned grit scale, Angela Duckworth looked at multiple factors (e.g., age, education) to see how they influenced grit. Yet, they did not consider race and ethnicity. Due to unique aspects of the Hispanic culture, we sought to explore the lived experiences of grit in the Hispanic culture through a phenomenological investigation. We used semi-structured interviews with eight Hispanic participants aged 26 to 63. Three themes emerged: Perseverance in the Process, Collectivist Motivation, and Relational Support. We share implications for counselors and counselor educators working with Hispanic clients and students.
