Abstract
The authors discuss the history and shortcomings of post seals in lead-acid batteries and the need for improved seal designs in sealed (recombinant) products. A model of the electrochemical processes of both creep and nodular types of post seal corrosion is presented. A recently developed vulcanized rubber post seal and representative generic mechanical compression and epoxy post seals are described. The apparatus and test parameters including a complete listing of all variables examined are detailed. Generalized and specific results of a comparative testing program are discussed for each of the three seal types. Based on the test results, an optimized configuration for each seal type is presented. The vulcanized rubber seal demonstrates the best overall performance in the comparative study and is chosen for further development including multiple temperature and polarization testing.<>
