Abstract
Successful utilization of fibre-optic networks on aircraft requires compatibility between all the individual components and an operating range commensurate with the in-service platform environment. Individual component testing is an important first step to achieving a viable system but sub-system testing can provide a more complete understanding of whether the system requirements can be met before full qualification is undertaken. This is particularly true for multi-mode links where redistribution of the optical modes within the fibre can have significant effects on a component performance. At BAE Systems we have assembled an Optical Component and System Assessment Rig (OSCAR) to enable sub-system evaluations. Here the principles and features of OSCAR are described together with examples of results.
