Abstract
Faced with competition and explosive growth of Internet usage, Polish telecom operators need to provide more transport capacity quickly, flexibly and economically. Large and medium sized businesses demand high capacity fiber access. Dense wavelength division multiplexing (D-WDM), at N/spl times/2.5 Gbit/s level, is technology of choice for network upgrades now, with N/spl times/10 Gbit/s systems considered for near future. This paper attempts to identify reasons for the difference and suggest optimum choice for Poland, taking into account conditions like economics and geography. The conclusion is generally to stay with G.652 fiber in medium term-5 years or so, rather than massively invest in nonzero-dispersion shifted fiber plant right now.
