Abstract

Chapter 2 establishes the historical context by summarizing how Nubri gradually became part of the broader Tibetan Buddhist cultural world through the immigration of lamas and establishment of temples. Even after being incorporated into the Hindu kingdom of Nepal during the nineteenth century, the residents of Nubri retained a Tibetan cultural orientation. The chapter’s historical perspective is essential for understanding the development of the social networks that play a major role in shaping the direction and magnitude of today’s educational migration.
