Becoming Nuns
Pub Date : 2018-10-30 DOI: 10.1525/california/9780520299511.003.0006
G. Childs, Namgyal Choedup
Chapter 6 begins with the life story of a village-based nun to demonstrate how a woman’s path to religious attainment can be strewn with obstacles rooted in gender roles and ideologies. The chapter then explores the motives parents have for making their daughters nuns, the advantages young women perceive in pursuing a religious vocation, and gendered notions of virtue that affect life opportunities for nuns. The main theme of the chapter centers on how the modernizing of Buddhist institutions and educational migration are transforming the nun’s role from a servant in her parents’ village household to a disciple of the Buddha’s teachings who resides in an urban institution.

Becoming Students
Pub Date : 2018-10-30 DOI: 10.1525/california/9780520299511.003.0007

Chapter 7 focuses on secular education and opens with a case study that illustrates some of the dilemmas that arose during the initial years of educational migration, including how variables ranging from gender to birth parity to political instability affect schooling opportunities. It then addresses the questions of why and how parents are sending children away for school and explores parents’ thoughts on the benefits of secular education. The chapter then analyzes educational migration within a framework of migration network theory, extends the cumulative causation argument by demonstrating how monks play a role in finding places in schools for their younger relatives, and discusses the potential for educational migration to enhance rather than reduce socioeconomic disparities.

The Transformative Potential of Educational Migration
Pub Date : 2018-10-30 DOI: 10.1525/CALIFORNIA/9780520299511.003.0009

Chapter 9 discusses how education, career aspirations, and life outside the village detach youths from their rural homesteads. It begins by analyzing the sending of children to distant institutions as a form of fosterage intended to enhance their livelihood opportunities, then explores how educational migration is driving a unique trajectory of population change that diverges in key ways from the forecasts of demographic transition theory. The focus then shifts to endogamy to illustrate how marital choices are expanding in conjunction with newfound ideologies and autonomy, but not without bounds, due to the enduring influence of parents. The chapter concludes by critiquing the notion that arranged marriage is an artifact of a traditional society that withers under the forces of secular education and modernization.

Embedding the Household in the Village
Pub Date : 2018-10-30 DOI: 10.1525/CALIFORNIA/9780520299511.003.0003
G. Childs, Namgyal Choedup
Chapter 3 offers a fine-grained ethnographic analysis of one village’s use of economic and cultural practices to forge a tight-knit community from individual households. It begins by examining the household from the perspectives of anthropology and demography and then details how villagers employ secular and religious administrative systems to levy funds that support communal rites. The chapter concludes by linking men’s village-refined ritual skills with seasonal migration to cities, where they perform rites for urban Buddhist patrons and thereby establish social ties that facilitate educational migration for their children.
