A Visual Grammar Analysis of Chinese Health Popularization Posters

Abstract

Using Chinese health popularization posters as the corpus, based on the theory of visual grammar, this research explores how different visual grammar is employed in Chinese health science popu-larization posters to construct meaning from three perspectives: reproductive meaning, interactive meaning, and compositional meaning. The findings suggest that the reproductive meaning of image is to present the core content of a specific topic in health popularization; the interactive meaning of image is to establish an interactive relationship between the public and the health popularization scene; and the role of compositional meaning is to enhance the attractiveness of health popularization posters to the public.
