The Bojo Algouinsan Ecotourism Initiative: Crisis Mitigation Through Community Tourism Development

Abstract

Faced with many environmental threats to the ecologically sensitive Tañon Strait in the Filipino province of Cebu, the town of Aloguinsan and the village of Bojo turn to tourism to protect their community from oil drilling and cement manufacturing. Guided by Mr Joselito “Boboi” Costas, the Bojo community has created an award-winning ecotourism destination. The aim of this case study is to highlight how a community successfully employed tourism as a tool to mitigate various risks and to provide a much-needed extra source of income to the community. © The Authors 2023
