Navigating through Transnational Experiences of Chinese Working Holiday Makers in New Zealand
Pub Date : 2024-06-04 DOI: 10.1079/tourism.2024.0053

In 2008, New Zealand took the lead globally in offering a working holiday scheme to Chinese youth following the Free Trade Agreement between the two countries. This scheme allows Chinese participants to live, work, and/or travel for 12 months in New Zealand, which attracted huge attention and sparked enormous interest among young Chinese. Against this backdrop, the primary focus of this case study is to examine the transnational experiences of Chinese working holiday makers (WHMs) in New Zealand through a cultural lens, highlighting the distinctive characteristics of this cohort. In particular, this case study explores the factors that motivated young Chinese to become WHMs in New Zealand. Moreover, this case sheds light on their dual-layered working experience; namely how they adapted to the positive working dynamics in New Zealand compared to the working experience back in China while still navigating through perceived precarious situations. This case further discusses how Chinese individuals have transformed their understanding of sociocultural norms and parental expectations through working holidays. Furthermore, the case study examines the broader economic impact of this growing cohort on New Zealand, providing insights into the implications of the working holiday scheme. © The Author 2024

One Man, Two Women and a Dog: Cases of Ageing in the Outdoors

These three auto-ethnographies are the embodied stories of lifelong outdoor enthusiasts. They explore the sensibilities of and entanglements with nature and corporeality of ‘Baby Boomers’. Each narrative reveals the embodied challenges remembered and experienced. We show that getting older and experiencing illness and/or injury does not deny opportunities to enjoy nature-based activities and performance in the outdoors. These narratives provide illumination and snapshots of older outdoor participants’ engagement in/with the outdoors. The first narrative highlights the sensibilities and real affects/effects of illness and how they are managed to retain involvement in outdoor leadership. The next explores the author’s emotions at adapting her embodied activities as she becomes older. The final tale describes how running and walking with an ageing dog opens up comparisons with the author’s own embodied capabilities and enjoyment of the outdoors. © CAB International 2024
© CAB International 2024

Tourism is a central driver of economic growth and prosperity in Indonesia with Bali as arguably its best known and most successful destination. To replicate the success of Bali, disperse visitors and deliver economic outcomes to other regions in Indonesia, the Indonesian Government has identified five super-priority destinations to be the future ‘New Balis’. Labuan Bajo is identified as one such destination. It is the gateway to the Komodo National Park which is famous for its Komodo Dragons. It is also popular among scuba divers due to its high marine biodiversity, including over 1000 fish species and 260 coral species. Labuan Bajo also hosted the G20 side event and ASEAN Summit in 2023, attracting further global attention to the region. In many ways, Labuan Bajo is seen as another tourism success story. © The Authors 2024

Toronto’s Respite Program for Families of Children with Complex Needs

Destination Toronto (DT), Toronto’s Destination Marketing Organization (DMO), aims to bring visitors and conference attendees to Toronto. DMOs have an extensive network in the visitor economy that they can activate to address social issues in their communities. The well-being of caregivers to children with complex special needs is often overlooked despite the important role they play. The visitor economy can contribute some relief to this group by providing a pleasant break from day-to-day responsibilities of care. DT uses its network of tourism-related businesses to give back to the community through the Relax, Recharge, Renew (RRR) Program, offering a weekend trip to parents and caregivers of children with special needs. This case study displays the importance of having social intrapreneurs who drive change to provide resident-tailored tourism experiences and underscores the significance of local partnerships. Additionally, realistic considerations for replicability at other destinations are discussed. The case study highlights the potential to expand collaboration in the hospitality and tourism sector, providing enriching experiences to underserved residents. © The Authors 2024

Looking Behind the Stage in a Beach Paradise: Taganga, Colombia
Pub Date : 2024-02-15 DOI: 10.1079/tourism.2024.0024
Freddy Giovanny Quiroga Nieto, Luis Leonardo Garavito González, Narcís Bassols Gardella
This case study looks beyond the clichés of paradise destinations in the Caribbean through an in-depth exploration of one of the beach destinations in this region. Extensive research performed on-site reveals the main junctures of the place’s history in the scheme of tourism development. The once isolated fishing community of Taganga on the Caribbean coast of Colombia is examined via participant and non-participant observation, and with semi-structured interviews that uncover the dynamics of negotiations and conflicts between the community, visitors, local authorities, and tourist industry. The changes in the nature of visitor markets are also reported as they relate to the actions of external and internal stakeholders. The effects of these changes over time are evident in the community’s shifting economy as well as in the destination’s environment. These mirror shifts at local, national, and international levels, and the authors will discuss whether they indicate advancing towards more value and higher experiential levels, as is posited by the literature. © The Authors 2024
