Abstract
The autobiographies of historical figures have been an important primary source for historical research on China. Many long-lived scholars and translators have published their autobiographies to recall their life journeys and bear witness to the historical development of modern China. The newly published autobiography of renowned English-to-Chinese translator Yang Yi provides a landscape of social life in modern China and presents a left-elite historical narrative of the Republic of China (ROC, 中 華 民 國 , 1912-1949).
