Prevention of reinfection following CIED reimplantation is a prominent challenge. One of the most difficult aspects of managing CIED infections is the complexities of their diagnosis: with the complexities of many infections, timely and correct diagnosis becomes complicated, frequently causing delays in commencing proper therapy, and worsening disease severity. As patients receiving CIED therapy are now older, and possess significant comorbidities, they are at a higher risk of infection. The American Heart Association (AHA) has issued a statement to educate clinicians about CIED infections, and the required care for those with suspected or diagnosed infections. To prevent an infection from spreading, it is important to isolate the causative pathogen and perform testing for susceptibility, which is required for crucial choices, including routes and duration of antimicrobial therapy.
