Abstract
Described as an early sign of schizophrenia (or dementia praecox) between the years 1927 and 1930 by two French psychiatrists, Paul Abély and Achille Delmas, the “mirror sign” was subsequently the object of in-depth studies by eminent specialists outside of France who discussed its semiotic value and its early interpretations. In this regard, we will underscore the key role played by psychoanalytical ideas, specifically the concept of narcissism. We will also note the relative neglect of results of the mirror test for other categories of patients, particularly those with intellectual deficiencies due to aging (a now well-studied group).
