Abstract

Studies in the field of disability focus on the disabled person and his/her welfare. However, it is also important to reveal and develop the capacities of the people and systems that the disabled person interacts with, based on a holistic approach in the field of disability and the approach of the individual in his/her environment. In this context, it is thought that studies to be conducted with family members who spend a large part of their time with the disabled person and provide care to the disabled person will contribute to the welfare of disabled individuals and the field of disability. The aim of this study is to examine the relationship between the demographic and social characteristics of family members who provide care to the disabled person and their burden of care. The study was designed with a quantitative research design. The sample of the study consists of 263 caregivers residing in a province of Turkey and benefiting from home care support. Within the scope of the study, the "Burden of Caregiving Scale" (Burden Interview) developed by Zarit, Reever and Bach-Peterson and validated for the Turkish population by Erdem and İnci in 2007 was used. As a result of the study, it was determined that most of the caregivers were women (87.1%), housewives (85.9%), married (81%), had children (84%), graduated from primary school (44%), had a large family structure (56.7%), lived with the disabled person (98.5%), and did not receive training to provide care (92.4%). It was determined that there was no significant relationship between the care burden of caregivers and their family type, living with the disabled person, receiving education for providing care, duration of caregiving, educational status, occupation, and income; there was a significant relationship between the care burden of the caregiver and age, gender, marital status, degree of closeness with the disabled person, having children, and disability group of the disabled person. Key Words: Burden of Care, Disability, Home Care Support
