In all, 92,5% of physiotherapists have already been compelled to refuse a patient due to the chronic nature of their pain. Stigmatizing behaviors are very common. Abstract
Background
Chronic pain represents a significant burden for both patients and the healthcare system. Therapeutic Alliance appears to be a key determinant of treatment outcomes in the context of chronic pain. Conversely, stigmatization could have a detrimental effect. To date, no study has documented the stigmatization behavior among French physiotherapists treating chronic pain.
Material and methods
A mixed-method study was self-administered online to assess both stigmatization behavior and the tool used by the physiotherapist to evaluate therapeutic alliance.
Results
Forty participants included. In all, 92,5% of physiotherapists have already been compelled to refuse a patient due to the chronic nature of their pain. Stigmatizing behaviors are very common. Very few of them assess the quality of their therapeutic alliance in practice.
Conclusions
