Abstract

The corrosion behavior of Laves precipitates in FeCrAl-1Nb alloy was investigated in four different deoxygenated solutions at 290 °C and 7 MPa. The Laves precipitates exhibit potential size effect during corrosion in a weak alkaline solution: the microscale precipitates undergo oxidation with amorphization and element dissolution, and these phenomena are not observed in nanoscale precipitates. The corrosion of nanoscale precipitates is less insensitive to slight changes in pH; however, micro-galvanic corrosion was observed between some nanoscale precipitates and the ferrite phase. Deuterium isotope labeling experiments observed hydrogen enrichment in some oxidized precipitates.
