Abstract

The early embryonic segmentation and vertebral column arise from the genetic material of the somites and, as in every other organ in the human body, they are part of, and inseparable from, the overall development of the embryo. The first somites and their subcomponents arise from the end of the 3rd week of development in a constructively logical succession as a gradual differentiation of the unsegmented mesenchyme. Following the development of the somites, a closed series of formative processes then leads to the development of the vertebral column. Resegmentation of somites does not occur in the formation of the vertebral column. This is the first time that we have described the basic embryological principles according to Blechschmidt in this way.
