Abstract
The concern regarding phthalate ester contamination is a reemerging topic that is not without merit. Since the early 21st century numerous studies have been published on the adverse effects of phthalate exposure. The lack of regulations regarding the presence of phthalates in environmental matrices, however, means that studying their presence in the environment and how that affects ecosystems and human health is an important area of research. The objective of this review is to highlight the issues of phthalate contamination, as well as the different analytical techniques that have been described in the literature to identify phthalate esters in environmental samples.
