Abstract
The advancement of renewable energy (RE) depends significantly on political determination and proactive governmental leadership. This study explores the influence of political promotion incentives on RE development in China, emphasizing both internal and external mechanisms. Addressing empirical gaps in existing research provides fresh insights into how institutional factors influence RE development. Key findings include: 1) promotion incentives for local officials substantially accelerate RE development, particularly when RE metrics are integrated into performance evaluation frameworks; 2) power transmission infrastructure and industrial upgrading serve as effective "helping hands," enabling local officials to facilitate RE expansion; and 3) higher-income regions amplify the impact of these promotion incentives, aligning with the "energy stacking" hypothesis, which posits a shift toward cleaner energy as income levels rise.
