Abstract

On the cover: Computational design in agriculture is the use of data-driven systems and tools to propose and 36 evaluate alternative configurations of agricultural systems. It is unique from digital agriculture −37 the use of remote sensing, variable rate technology, and optimization/control procedures – in that 38 it integrates computational and crop science approaches to formulate problems rather than simply 39 relying on digital technologies to mitigate them. In a new special issue entitled “Computational Design of Changing Cropping Systems,” we highlight how computational design could be used to adapt agricultural systems to better meet societal goals more rapidly and at lower cost. Many disciplines within crop sciences are represented, from breeding to cropping systems agronomy. Read the introduction to the special issue by Michael Kantar and coauthors (https://doi.org/10.1002/csc2.70034). Photo credit: Brad Bernhard.

Articles in Crop Science are of interest to researchers, policy makers, educators, and practitioners. The scope of articles in Crop Science includes crop breeding and genetics; crop physiology and metabolism; crop ecology, production, and management; seed physiology, production, and technology; turfgrass science; forage and grazing land ecology and management; genomics, molecular genetics, and biotechnology; germplasm collections and their use; and biomedical, health beneficial, and nutritionally enhanced plants. Crop Science publishes thematic collections of articles across its scope and includes topical Review and Interpretation, and Perspectives articles.
