Abstract
Bariatric surgery is recognized as the most effective method for patients with severe obesity (BMI ≥ 30 kg/m²) or complicated obesity (BMI between 30 and 34.9 kg/m² with uncontrolled type 2 diabetes for at least one year). This article aims to examine the evolution of mental health after the procedure. Anxiety-depressive disorders and binge eating usually decrease within two years post-surgery. However, studies show an increased risk of alcohol or substance use disorders after surgery. Additionally, there has been an increase in self-harming and suicidal behaviors. In conclusion, bariatric surgery should be part of a personalized, multidisciplinary approach to ensure the best benefit-risk ratio for each patient.
