Abstract

Air pollution from transportation remains a critical environmental and public health issue in Latin America, affecting quality of life, sustainable development, and global climate objectives. This paper aims to empirically investigate the barriers and challenges of air quality and transport in the urban context of the region. Initially, we highlight the health and environmental implications of traffic-related air pollution, and stress the need for effective solutions. While not exhaustive, the conceptual and empirical findings of this study aim to guide planners and decision-makers in formulating public policies related to urban road transport. The paper offers (i) a description of air quality issues in Latin America, (ii) an analysis of potential solutions and strategies, including policy measures for air quality improvement and technological innovations in transportation, and (iii) guidance for devising effective strategies to combat this pressing environmental issue in the region. Through an interdisciplinary approach, we synthesize existing literature and emphasize the urgent need for coordinated action and a holistic strategy to address this complex challenge. Our findings highlight the crucial role of adopting clean technologies and promoting behavioral changes to mitigate air pollution effectively and achieve sustainable development in the region.
