Abstract

Introduction and objectives

Suicide is a worldwide public health problem, defined as a self-inflicted violent act, characterized by being a timeless and multicausal phenomenon. Among the main causes of suicide are physical illnesses and mental health problems, low self-esteem, poverty, unemployment, loss of a loved one, substance use disorder, and socioeconomic problems in general.

Methods

Descriptive quantitative research was carried out, where sociodemographic characteristics associated with people who died by suicide were analyzed, the main descriptive statistics of frequency and dispersion were calculated, and the departmental and municipal suicide rate was calculated based on DANE population projections.

Results

In the period 2015-2020 in the department of Cordoba, 285 people committed suicide, with a suicide rate of 2.7/100.000 inhabitants; most of the cases were reported in men. For male over mortality, it was found that for every woman, 5.3 men committed suicide. The highest suicide rate by municipality was found in Sahagun with 4.1 suicides per 100.000 inhabitants and the lowest in Valencia with 0.1 suicides/100.000 inhabitants.

Conclusion

It was concluded that it is necessary to deepen the investigation of social, economic and health conditions specific to the region and the municipalities to clarify the factors that determine the suicidal acts that occur in the department of Córdoba.
