Abstract:"Trouser Parts," in opera, refer to ostensibly male characters sung by a female singer. Often such choices are more than a mere convention: they cast light on difficulties of gender identification in adolescence. Drawing on Jessica Benjamin's theoretical work, the essay examines operas by Mozart, Strauss, and Offenbach.
