Abstract

Faced with the backwardness of the northern Valencian lands, in the last decades of the 19th cen-tury a number of people tried to introduce transformations in their agricultural landscape, especially in la Plana, which could mean a socio-economic advance. Among the protagonists of these proposals were technicians who had been trained to analyse what and how it was grown, and proposed what needed to be modified. One of these specialists in agriculture was Fernando Bou i Gascó (1828-1884), who experimented and wrote about the measures that had to be taken to deal with the problems of traditional crops, such as the phylloxera in the vineyard, and on possible new irrigated crops, such as cane and citrus, to replace cereals and hemp.
