Abstract

Dr Donald Sherwood Horning died in Tamworth, New South Wales, Australia, after a period of declining health due to Parkinson ’ s disease. He was a research scientist with deep knowledge of the natural history of the Subantarctic Islands of New Zealand and Australia. We had the privilege of meeting him in 1974, while we were studying and working in the Department of Zoology at the University of Canterbury in Christchurch, New Zealand. Among his family and peers, Dr Horning was informally known as ‘ Woody ’ and as ‘ Don ’ . As a young man he was called Woody, derived from his second name and referring to his strength and resilience, as he proudly told us. However, his second wife, Carol, preferred to address him as Don, as he came to be known by many colleagues and students from 1970 to 1978. After his divorce from Carol, he returned to his preferred nickname, Woody, which we will use in this obituary from here onwards. Woody

The invertebrate diversity of New Zealand is of great interest worldwide because of its geographic isolation and geological history. The New Zealand Entomologist plays an important role in disseminating information on field-based, experimental, and theoretical research. The New Zealand Entomologist publishes original research papers, review papers and short communications. We welcome submissions in all aspects of science regarding insects and arthropods in a New Zealand or Australasian setting. The journal’s subject matter encompasses taxonomy, phylogenetics, biogeography, biological control and pest management, conservation, ecology and natural history. The journal is the official publication of the Entomological Society of New Zealand. Papers published or submitted elsewhere for publication will not be considered, but publication of an abstract or summary elsewhere (e.g. conference proceedings) does not preclude full publication in the New Zealand Entomologist. Accepted papers become copyright of the Entomological Society of New Zealand. The journal is published in English, but we also welcome publication of abstracts in Maori.
