Resumo Considerado o "primeiro mestre" de Machado de Assis, o poeta português Francisco Gonçalves Braga (1836-1860) é um ilustre desconhecido nas literaturas brasileira e portuguesa. Dessa forma, o artigo mostra aspectos da vida literária de Gonçalves Braga, sobretudo nos seis anos em que viveu no Rio de Janeiro.
