Abstract

Recently, our coverage of Toray Industries Inc's technology has focused on membranes that the company has developed for reducing carbon dioxide emissions in hydrogen purification processes, reverse osmosis in the desalination sector and ultrafiltration for water treatment. However, the Japanese firm's material science is also applied widely in the battery industry. This focus article briefly looks at nanofiltration membrane technology it has developed to recover lithium from used car batteries. It also discusses an ion-conductive polymer membrane it has created to enhance the safety and longevity of lightweight air batteries used to power industrial drones and required to make urban air mobility systems a reality.
