A robust membrane that aims to make clean water production more affordable for developing countries has been developed in Singapore by a water technology start-up company along with two universities. The researchers behind the work say that it is made, using common polymers, at a fraction of the cost of the more expensive membranes employed by developed nations. A water treatment system that incorporates the membrane has also been designed and piloted. Taking advantage of the membrane's increased robustness and lower cost will enable this system to handle challenging environments in many regional countries such as Vietnam and Indonesia.

Research done in the USA has led to the development of polymer membranes that have the potential to reshape how refineries process crude oil. Capable of improving distillation processes, their use could dramatically reduce the energy and water required, whilst extracting even more useful materials. The scientists conducting the research have also created artificial intelligence tools to predict the performance of these kinds of membranes, which could help accelerate the development of new ones.

US chemical engineers have developed a way of making direct air capture (DAC) cheaper and more efficient. Using their approach – based on coated carbon fibres contained in a specially design canister – they found that carbon dioxide could be produced with sufficient purity for underground sequestration. It also has the potential to eliminate many of the substantial upfront costs of building typical capture systems.
