Abstract

Introduction

Today, knowledge of age is of great importance in many aspects of life (legal, civil and forensic). The objective of this study was to test the validity and applicability of the London Atlas tooth in estimating dental age in Senegalese subjects using panoramic radiographs.

Methods

A total of 148 panoramic radiographs of Senegalese subjects aged 6-23 years were included in this study. The London Atlas tooth was the subject of our investigation. The collected data were analyzed with SPSS version 19 software (IBM SPSS Statistics 19, Chicago, Illinois, USA). Comparison of means was done with Student's t test and a significance level P ≤ 0.05 was chosen.

Results

An underestimation of less than three months (0.33 ± 0.07) was noted. A strong correlation was noted between the age estimated according to the London Atlas method and the chronological age.

Conclusion

In sum, the London Atlas method showed a higher congruence than the Demirjian and Chaillet method.
