Abstract
EnglishIn this paper, we carry out an investigation on /d/ deletion in intervocalic position in Merida (Badajoz, Spain) and its surrounding area. We compare two linguistic areas, one urban (Merida), and one rural, which consists of 13 localities close to Merida. We intend to check how far this linguistic phenomenon has been extended. Although elision of /d/ is expected to be the most frequent variant in our corpus, since Merida belongs to an innovative area of European Spanish, this elision is unlikely to be categorical. For this reason, the effect of linguistic factors (vocalic environment, position of the accent, functionality) and extralinguistic factors (sex, age, and instruction level) on /d/ variation should be considered for a better understanding of the whole process.
