Abstract

Human mobility is a common experience for all peoples, especially in times of crisis. These mobility experiences take place in several cinematic narratives, especially the so-called great migrations of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. In Argentine and Brazilian cinematography this was a very explored topic. In more recent periods, gender issues have become part of the concerns of researchers about migration processes. Taking as sources of research the Latin American films Bolivia (Israel Adrián Caetano, 2001) and Estômago (Marcos Jorge, 2007), we analyze the representations about the migratory movements approached in these films from a gender perspective. Understanding masculinities as cultural constructions and considering the concept of hegemonic masculinity (CONNELL, 2013, 2015), we seek to understand how the masculinities of the characters in these films are (re) configured in contexts different from their places of origin and in situations of vulnerability to which are exposed.
