Abstract

Introduction

Positive body image is a multifaceted, holistic, and stable, although modifiable, construct that reflects a generalized love and respect for one's own body, which allows one to appreciate, accept and admire the unique beauty and functions of the body, even if it does not match idealized images. It is important to promote a positive body image from an early age.

Methods

This review aimed to synthesize the available evidence on the effectiveness of interventions to improve positive body image in children and adolescents. The search for information was conducted in PubMed, Web of Science, MEDLINE-ProQuest, and Google Scholar. The guidelines of the PRISMA statement were followed and the methodological quality of the studies was evaluated.

Results

The review included 10 studies, one of which was in Latin America. Different instruments have been used to evaluate the effectiveness of the interventions. Although in some investigations an improvement in the variables of interest was reported, the results do not persist over time. In the follow-up measures, no changes were found in satisfaction with appearance, quality of life and self-esteem.

Conclusion

Given the methodological heterogeneity of the studies and the cultural diversity of the participants, the picture regarding the effectiveness of the interventions is limited. Studies that contribute to the understanding and promotion of positive body image are needed.
