Objectives

The aim of this article was to evaluate the literature about the level of safety associated with the use of air-polishing prophilaxis units.

Materials and methods

The professional risk related to powder air-polishing with glycine and sodium bicarbonate was analyzed and the technical characteristics of equipment and materials were highlighted.

Results and conclusions

The removal of dental plaque by air-polishing devices is a fast and effective procedure, but the potential risks associated with it are not always correctly highlighted.
