Abstract
Chernyshevsky's negative post-Soviet reputation as the radical thinker whose writings helped to bring about the totalitarian nightmare of the Soviet century is disputed through a comparison with Alexander Herzen and his role in the revolutionary rhetoric of the nineteenth century.
