Abstract
In this paper, we analyze de (‘of’) + infinitive clauses subordinate to the Spanish perception verb ver (‘to see’). It is a late structure from a diachronic point of view which did not extend to the rest of the Romance languages. In the first part of the paper, it is shown that we are facing a defective construction with a syntactic behavior parallel to that of infinitive clauses without de ; in the second part, we demonstrate that this construction receives an epistemic interpretation, as the inflected verb clauses subordinate to ver .
