Abstract
On January 4, 1989, a brief skirmish took place over the Mediterranean Sea between two US Navy F-14 Tomcats and two Libyan-operated MiG-23 “Flogger” fighter aircraft. The Navy pilots shot down both MiGs. The American press reacted violently, and the Pentagon had to go defensive and forced to explain.
