Abstract

This is any crime that involves computer and a network. In some cases, the computer may have been used in order to commit the crime and in other cases the computer may have been the target of the crime. The oxford reference online defines ‘cyber-crime’ as crime committed over the Internet. The encyclopedia Britannica defines ‘cyber-crime’ as any crime that is committed by means of special knowledge or expert use of computer technology. So what exactly is cyber-crime? Cyber-crime could reasonably include a wide variety of criminal offences and activities. A generalized definition of cyber-crime may be ‘unlawful acts wherein the computer is either a tool or target or both’. The Cyber-crime can be generally defined as a criminal activity in which information technology systems are the means used for the commission of the crime (Figure 1).
