Abstract
My title - and that of this journal - is borrowed from an autobiography by the great Arnold Lunn, founder of skiing as a sport in Switzerland. He tells us that its publication synchronises with his skiing golden jubilee in 1898. This conference is not far past my golden jubilee as a skier - my first serious ski trip, aged 9, was to Mt Feathertop in 1947, the year before Lunn's book was published.
