Abstract

Pulse oximetry is a non-invasive method to measure the arterial oxygen saturation based on light absorption of oxy- and deoxyhaemoglobin. It improves safety in anaesthesia. The measurement is influenced by probe position, pigmentation, perfusion and ambient light. Knowledge of the measurement principles and influencing factors allows an optimal interpretation of the results and an adequate error management. The following review article describes the measurement principles and error sources of pulse oximetry.
