Abstract

In this preliminary study of two Indian villages there is indication of the social forces which resist the success of family planning programs. Motivation, the process of initiating conscious and purposeful action, is affected by several factors. Knowledge of sterilization surgery was limited and confused with castration. Acceptance by the villagers was not forthcoming. One who had surgery was considered a deviant. The economic reward of a smaller family to educate and care for may not be strong enough to overcome the social pressures of the culture. Family planning workers need to be aware of these pressures and use techniques to overcome them.
